iColorNamer - iPhone 4+ version by Simon Wilson

iColorNamer is designed to assist individuals with normal vision, blindness, and color blindness in identifying and naming colors of everyday objects. The app utilizes a live stream of iPhone camera data to feed into a color recognition algorithm. This algorithm processes color information within a central square, providing both visual display and audio announcements of the color names.

The underlying algorithm stems from a project by the University of Manchester in the UK aimed at developing a more refined and universally comprehensible method for conveying color information to individuals with visual impairments.

Important to highlight that the color recognition algorithm was initially crafted for webcams. Testing showed its accuracy rates at 86% in daylight or fluorescent light (white light) and 65% in halogen or tungsten light (yellow light). While not flawless, this app represents an improvement in both accuracy and clarity compared to many existing commercial algorithms, as it adheres to clear, widely understood, and standard color names.
